The Complete Guide to Nail Enhancements: Gel-X, Builder Gel & Poly Gel

Published May 16, 2026 · Amherst Nails & Spa

If you’ve been browsing nail salons and seen terms like Gel-X, Builder Gel, and Poly Gel — and had no idea what any of them meant — you’re not alone. The gel nail world has exploded with options over the past few years, and each system works differently. At Amherst Nails & Spa, we offer all three. Here’s a clear breakdown so you can walk in knowing exactly what you want.

Why Gel Enhancements?

Traditional acrylic nails are still popular and effective, but gel enhancements have grown rapidly because they:

  • Feel lighter and more flexible on the nail
  • Have little to no strong odor during application
  • Tend to be less damaging to the natural nail when removed correctly
  • Look naturally glossy without needing a separate polish coat

All three gel systems we offer include gel polish in the service price — no extra step needed.

Gel-X: The Soft Gel Extension

What it is: Gel-X uses pre-shaped, soft gel tips that are sized to each nail and adhered with gel adhesive, then cured under a LED lamp.

How it’s applied:

  1. Natural nails are prepped and buffed
  2. A gel base is applied
  3. A pre-formed soft gel tip in the right size is selected for each nail
  4. Tips are adhered and cured
  5. Shaped, filed, and gel polish applied

Best for: First-time extension wearers, clients who want a natural look with added length, and those who want minimal nail prep time.

Durability: 3–4 weeks, with fills available. Gel-X tips can lift if nails are frequently submerged in water or exposed to oils.

Price at Amherst NS: Full set $70 | Fill-in $60 (cash pricing)

Includes: Shape, length, and gel polish

Builder Gel: Strength and Structure

What it is: Builder Gel is applied directly to the natural nail using a brush, sculpted and shaped, then cured under LED. It builds structure on the nail itself rather than using a tip.

How it’s applied:

  1. Natural nails are prepped — old gel or product removed
  2. Builder Gel is brushed on in layers, building up structure
  3. Cured under LED lamp between layers
  4. Filed and shaped to the desired length and form
  5. Gel polish applied and cured

Best for: Clients with weak, thin, or damaged nails who want strength without adding a lot of product. Also great for those who want a more natural-looking extension that follows the nail’s own shape.

Durability: 3–4 weeks. Because it bonds directly to the nail, it tends to have excellent retention.

Price at Amherst NS: Full set $70 (includes removal) | Fill-in $60 (cash pricing)

Includes: Removal of old product, gel polish

Poly Gel: The Best of Both Worlds

What it is: Poly Gel is a hybrid product — part acrylic strength, part gel flexibility. It comes in a tube and is applied using a dual-form (a plastic mold that shapes the nail) or a brush-and-slip technique with a slip solution.

How it’s applied:

  1. Nails prepped
  2. Poly Gel squeezed from the tube and placed on the nail or into a dual-form
  3. Shaped using a brush and slip solution (prevents sticking)
  4. Cured under LED lamp
  5. Dual-form removed, shaped, and gel polish applied

Best for: Clients who want the durability of acrylics but the lighter feel of gel. Poly Gel holds shape extremely well under pressure and is a great option for clients who are hard on their nails.

Durability: 4–5 weeks with proper care. Strongest retention of the three gel systems.

Price at Amherst NS: Full set $80 | Fill-in $70 (cash pricing)

Includes: Gel polish

How Are They Removed?

All three gel systems should be removed by soaking in acetone — never peeled or forced off. Peeling causes the most nail damage, not the gel itself.

At Amherst Nails & Spa, Builder Gel full sets include removal in the service price. For Gel-X and Poly Gel, removal with a new service is $7 (cash); removal without a new service is $20.

Which Should You Choose?

  • First time with extensions? → Start with Gel-X. Lightest feel, easiest to maintain.
  • Damaged or thin nails? → Builder Gel. It strengthens while it beautifies.
  • Very active lifestyle? → Poly Gel. It holds up to the most pressure and wear.
  • Not sure? → Come in for a consultation. Our technicians will look at your natural nails and make the call with you.
