If you’ve never had a spa pedicure, you might not know exactly what to expect — and that uncertainty can make people hesitant to book. This post walks you through exactly what happens during a spa pedicure at Amherst Nails & Spa, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave with beautifully polished feet.
Before You Arrive
A few simple things make your visit smoother:
- Wear or bring open-toe footwear. Flip-flops or sandals let your polish dry without smudging on your way out.
- Avoid shaving your legs right before. Freshly shaved skin can be more sensitive to scrubs and massage. If you shave, do it the day before.
- No special prep needed otherwise. You don’t need to trim or shape anything beforehand — that’s what we’re here for.
Step 1: Getting Settled
You’ll be guided to one of our pedicure chairs — the kind with a built-in massage function and a warm foot bath. The chair is yours for the entire appointment, so settle in and get comfortable. We’ll start the foot soak immediately.
Step 2: The Warm Mineral Soak
Every pedicure at Amherst Nails & Spa begins with a warm softening mineral soak. This relaxes the skin, softens calluses, and makes cuticle work much easier. Depending on which tier you choose, the soak may include aromatherapy salts, bath bombs, or flower petals.
Take this time to decompress. Many clients tell us the soak alone is worth the visit.
Step 3: Nail Care
Once your feet have soaked, your technician will:
- Trim and shape your nails to your preferred length and shape
- Buff the nail surface smooth
- Gently push back and tidy your cuticles
- Clean beneath the nail edges
This is done carefully and precisely. If you have a preference for nail shape (square, round, oval), let your technician know at the start.
Step 4: Exfoliation and Callus Treatment
Next comes a sea salt or sugar scrub to exfoliate the skin, followed by a callus treatment on the heels and balls of the feet. This is one of the most satisfying parts — you’ll feel the difference immediately. Rough, dry skin is smoothed away, leaving soft, refreshed feet.
Step 5: Upgrades (Depends on Your Tier)
This is where the pedicure tiers really shine. Depending on which service you choose, you may also receive:
- Hydrating mask — a nourishing cream applied to feet and wrapped in hot towels
- Paraffin wax dip — feet dipped into warm wax to lock in moisture
- Aromatherapy — pick a scent for your treatment products
- Hot stone massage — smooth heated stones used in the leg and foot massage
- Collagen socks — a treatment wrap that boosts hydration
- Warm neck pillow — yes, your neck gets to relax too
Our Basic Pedicure (25 min, $40) covers steps 1–4. The Royal Pedicure (75 min, $115) adds a paraffin wax, 26-minute hot stone massage, collagen gloves, neck pillow, and more. The Signature Pedicure (105 min, $160) includes everything — and you get a crown and banner to wear during your service.
Step 6: The Massage
Every pedicure includes a lotion massage of the feet and lower legs. The duration increases with each tier — from a 2-minute lotion massage in the Basic, up to a 35-minute leg massage in the Signature.
The massage portion is what most clients look forward to most. Don’t be shy about telling your technician your preferences — firmer pressure, focus on the arch, lighter touch near the ankle — we’re here to make it perfect for you.
Step 7: Polish Application
Once the massage is complete and your feet are dried, it’s time for polish. You choose your color from our extensive wall of options. Your technician applies a base coat, 2 coats of color, and a top coat for shine and durability.
Gel polish ($15 add-on) is also available if you’d like a longer-lasting finish.
After Your Pedicure
- Your nails need about 30–45 minutes to dry fully (less with gel). Flip-flops are essential.
- Avoid tight shoes or socks for a few hours.
- Apply cuticle oil in the days following to keep skin soft.
Regular pedicures (every 4–6 weeks) maintain the health and appearance of your feet year-round — not just in sandal season.
