Dip Powder vs Gel Polish: Pros, Cons & Which Lasts Longer

Published April 28, 2026 · Amherst Nails & Spa

Two of the most popular nail services at Amherst Nails & Spa are dip powder and gel polish — and clients often ask us which one is better. The honest answer: it depends on your lifestyle, nail goals, and how much maintenance you want. Here’s a thorough, side-by-side comparison.

What Is Gel Polish?

Gel polish is a flexible, UV-cured nail coating applied in thin layers directly over the natural nail (or over enhancements). It’s cured under a LED lamp between each coat. The result is a glossy, chip-resistant finish that lasts 2–3 weeks.

Our gel manicure at Amherst Nails & Spa starts at $45 (cash) and includes gel polish over your natural nails. We can also add gel polish to any pedicure or acrylic set.

What Is Dip Powder?

Dip powder is applied by dipping the nail into — or brushing on — a fine colored powder, sealed with a resin-based top coat. No UV lamp is required. The result is a harder, thicker coating that typically lasts 3–4 weeks, sometimes longer.

Our dip powder service starts at $50 (cash) for 1 color, with ombre and pink & white options available.

Which Lasts Longer?

Dip powder wins on longevity. Because the product is thicker and harder than gel polish, it’s more resistant to everyday wear — typing, cleaning, cooking. Many clients go 4 full weeks before needing a new set.

Gel polish, being thinner and more flexible, can chip sooner if your nails are exposed to a lot of water or chemicals.

Bottom line: If you’re between appointments and need your nails to hold up without touching them up, dip powder is the more durable choice.

Is Dip Powder Safer Than Gel?

Neither is inherently unsafe when applied and removed correctly. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • UV exposure: Gel polish requires a UV/LED lamp. While the exposure per session is minimal, if this concerns you, dip powder eliminates the question entirely.
  • Removal: Both should be removed by soaking in acetone — never peeled or picked. Improper removal is the main cause of nail damage with both systems.
  • Product safety: Modern dip powder systems are formaldehyde-free and designed to be safe for regular use.

The Hygiene Factor

When dip powder is used in a salon, clients should never physically dip their fingers into a shared jar. At Amherst Nails & Spa, we brush or pour the powder over each client’s nails individually — no double-dipping. This maintains hygiene and prevents cross-contamination.

Which Should You Choose?

Go with gel polish if:

  • You prefer a thinner, more natural feel
  • You like switching colors frequently (gel removes easily)
  • You want a classic high-gloss finish
  • Budget is a priority ($45 vs $50)

Go with dip powder if:

  • You need nails that last 4 weeks without chipping
  • You prefer to avoid UV lamp exposure
  • Your natural nails are thin and need some added strength
  • You want ombre or French options with extra durability

Can You Combine Both?

Yes — we can apply gel top coat over dip powder for extra shine and protection. Ask your technician about this option when you visit.
